Texas Welding Certifications
Basic Certification
Obtaining a basic welding certification can be done through a variety of options, namely Texas trade schools, high schools, community colleges, and even university certifications.
The basic certification is generally acknowledged as a qualification to assist on the job site, not necessarily be the leader welder. The core program focuses around the fundamentals for things like safety and metal arc welding to thinks like blueprint diagnostics and oxy fuel welds.
Specialized Certifications
A specialized certification supports qualifications for specific types of welding. Examples include Tungsten inert gas welding and gas metal welding. You can expect to see similar topics as the basics in a few places, however, they will be much more in-depth. These are often needed to help land a supervisor level role on the job site.
American Welding Society
To be a legal welder in the state of Texas, you are required to be certified via the American Welding Society. This involves completing an application, verification of physical strength requirements, and a hands on test at an American Welding Society accredited institution.
Generally, the hands on test involves a supervisor scoring your welds and safety protocol assessments.
Steel Structures Certification
In order to become a welder for the Texas Department of Transportation, you’re required to familiarize yourself with the AWS Bridge Welding standards. Expect work involving steel beams, girders, and various other load bearing metal structures.
